Step out of the comfort zone
Learn by helping others
Wang Yihong initially majored in Food Science and Technology programme, but she developed her passion for coding and website design in computer class in her first year in UIC. After transferring to the Computer Science and Technology programme, she made a lot of effort to catch up with others, such as learning from video courses, previewing textbooks, sitting on other relevant classes, and occasionally turning to teachers and peers.
Interest is the best teacher. Wang participated in many competitions and research projects in her spare time. For example, she took part in the research team of the University of Toronto last summer vacation under the guidance of Vice President (Academic) Prof Huang Huaxiong.
Wang, together with her fellow students Zhang Yingfang, He Mengxian, Ren Zhenyu and Li Jianlong, founded a group called UICoding to help the people outside the campus learn computer coding voluntarily. They said they also learned a lot by helping others.

Summary leads to mastering
Foundation matters
Li Hui believes an efficient way to absorb knowledge is to grasp it. She emphasises the importance of understanding what teachers say while taking notes when necessary during the class. In addition, self-interpretation is required after class to get a better understanding of the knowledge by summarising it.
English proficiency plays an essential role for art students because they have a lot of reading. Li’s method to learn English is to “mimic” the native writing style. More specifically, she has been reading an English article every day since her first year. She would take four categories of notes to help her review in the future: vocabularies, phrases, educational terms, and translation of long and complex sentences.

Feng Yingying
Fourth-year student of the Cinema and Television programme
Winner of the Scholarship Scheme for Internship and Social Practices
Winner of Excellence Award of the 13th National Advertising Art Design Competition for College Students
Winner of First, Second, Third prize of the 13th National Advertising Art Design Competition for College Students in Guangdong Area (three entries)
Winner of the First Class Award for two consecutive years
The first step is always the hardest
I think; therefore, I am
Feng Yingying would set up goals for the whole new year every January. Similarly, she would set up goals at the beginning of each semester.
Feng suggests starting the tasks long before the deadline. For example, she usually started reading relevant materials three weeks before the deadline for each assignment. And make sure there is a whole day left to double-check if her work meets all the requirements.

Yan Jialin
Third-year student of the Marketing Management programme
Winner of the Second Class Award
Consult the teachers when having doubt
Group discussion inspires new ideas
Seize the spare time
As for the part that he doesn’t understand, Yan Jialin prefers to turn to teachers instead of checking textbooks all the time because teachers could provide a straightforward answer that could save quite an amount of time. Yan values the group discussions and sees them as opportunities for sharing sparks.
Yan suggests planning ahead and seizing the spare time. He always divides the workload into daily tasks, reducing the pressure of finishing the whole task at once. By doing so, there will be some time left to turn to teachers and peers for help if he has any questions.
