UICers from diverse programmes have benefitted from valuable internships this summer, gaining practical skills, industry experience, and a deeper understanding of their fields.
Xu Hangjun is a fourth-year student of UIC's Data Science Programme, and this summer, he worked at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences as an algorithm intern.
He said: "This job required me to have strong hands-on skills and solid computer foundations, and provided me with opportunities to be in key research projects and publish papers." He added that the academic atmosphere there was strong, and the senior researchers were quite friendly and helpful when he needed instructions.

Xu Hangjun interns at the Chinese Academy of Sciences
Yan Yu'ang is a fourth-year student of UIC's Food Science and Technology Programme, and he interned at the Guangzhou Customs Technology Centre this summer as a lab assistant, dealing with daily experiments on acute toxicity and skin irritation as well as the pre-processing of food and cosmetics testing samples.
The schedule in the centre was tight as Yan had to conduct different experiments on many samples every day. During his internship, he realised they were the gatekeepers for consumers' safety. Such a notion gave him a sense of social responsibility and urged him to learn more about toxicology.

Tan Siyu is a fourth-year student of UIC's Cinema and Television Programme, and she interned at the Sound and Image Centre of China Film Studio this summer, participating in the production of dynamic effects and sound mixing of film.
After experiencing the production work, Tan found it as attractive as she had expected, and UIC's courses enabled her to practice her knowledge during her internship. She planned to apply for a postgraduate programme in sound in the future and hoped she could keep valuing and appreciating sound in films.

Ge Pengyu is a third-year student of UIC's Cinema and Television Programme, and he interned at Hunan TV and Broadcast Intermediary during the holiday. During the internship, he gained skills in planning, communication and teamwork through party planning, guest interfacing, cross-department cooperation, and more.
Ge said that he also got acquainted with associates from different majors with different backgrounds, and he hoped to try more internships during his university years, discovering his passion and broadening his horizons.

Ge Pengyu interns at Hunan TV and Broadcast Intermediary
Niu Yishan is a third-year student of UIC's Media and Communication Studies Programme, and she worked as an intern in an interactive live broadcast operation in Xiaohongshu this summer. According to Niu, the internship allowed her to understand the Internet and social media fully, accumulate practical experience, and digest theoretical theories better.
She regarded a positive attitude, sincere and polite communication skills and decisive actions as more crucial than other paperwork. She said that the internship was an excellent chance to explore their interest.

Niu Yishan interns at the Xiaohongshu
Ning Jiayi, a fourth-year student of UIC's Data Science Programme, had been working on his research project at UIC during the summer, funded by the Guangdong provincial government. Although conducting academic research was full of challenges, he was able to seek guidance from excellent professors and scholars, and received front-tier opinions and experience during the journey.
He said that connecting with the outside world and accumulating resources was also beneficial for studying and researching.

As these students continue their studies and explore their career paths, UIC remains committed to fostering such opportunities for its students, emphasising the importance of hands-on learning and real-world exposure to complement their academic pursuits.
