At the invitation of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS) Prof Sung Mei-hwa, on behalf of UIC, together with representatives from Sun Yat-Sen University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the University of Macau, attended the Summit Forum on Translation Technology Research and Education held in Guangzhou on 18 May, where the “Greater Bay Area Translation Technology Salon” was unveiled.
Assistant Professor Dr Qian Hong and Lecture Mr Zhang Jia from Applied Translation Studies (ATS) Programme were also UIC representatives at the Forum.

The Forum brought together over 150 scholars, corporate executives and industry representatives from home and abroad to discuss issues pertaining to translation technology research and education in the era of artificial intelligence. Numerous experts from universities and the translation industry gave speeches on topics such as machine translation, corpus, and translation education technology. At the forum, the "Convention of Greater Bay Area Translation Technology Salon" is reviewed and approved, followed by an inauguration ceremony of the Salon.

The Greater Bay Area Translation Technology Salon, supported by Translation Technology Education Society of World Interpreter and Translator Training Association, is co-founded by 16 universities and 10 enterprises.

The Salon is a non-government and non-profit academic organization that aims to bring together translation technology experts and scholars in the Greater Bay Area. The purpose is to promote translation technology research and then, integrate these concepts in the Greater Bay Area, as well as the whole country. The Salon will hold a wide range of activities such as contests, research, trainings, university lectures, seminars, and share those events with a broader audience via live broadcast and recording.
UIC’s ATS Programme, as one of the initiators of the Salon, is committed to pursue excellence in professional translation education. Consistent with the aims of the Salon, ATS will seek to apply technology with education in order to better serve our nation’s mission to further intercultural communication as well as the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
