New generation ambassadors of Chinese culture

A group of students were invited to have breakfast with UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai on 2 November. This breakfast included a discussion between Prof Ng and the students.

Attendees were members of the Students’ Union as well as various Academy Societies. They shared their opinions on how to promote Chinese culture overseas.

Year 3 Finance student Yin Junge is the vice president of the Executive Committee of the Student Union. Junge suggested that the performances of Chinese traditional arts can be shown on the stages of important students’ activities, such as the freshmen welcoming party and the singing competition.

Also, there were students talking about the importance of the course of University Chinese offered by UIC. Year 3 Media Arts and Design student Zhuang Wei expressed that this course provided students with a better understanding of traditional Chinese culture, and encouraged students to apply the knowledge to their study and life.

During the discussion, Prof Ng also emphasized in this new era, the Chinese should look back at the traditional culture and absorb the quintessence of all types of culture.

“We should accept the advantages of the foreign cultures and transform them into a part of our culture, as well as have a deeper understanding of our culture. However, we also need to respect the local customs and traditional cultures when we promote our own culture outside.”

At the end of the breakfast meeting, Prof Ng restated the importance of the role of China’s younger generation in promoting Chinese culture and wished them a bright future after graduation.
