With the summer coming to an end, freshman students who are new to UIC have kicked off their new semester by participating in an intensive English Enhancement Programme (EEP), which ran from 29 August until 4 September.
The EEP was created to help new students adapt to the English learning environment at UIC. The programme focuses on the students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. It also introduces students to important campus resources such as the Learning Resource Centre, as well as Zhuhai itself.
In the mornings there are lessons while the afternoons contain activities, which are all provided by the faculty members of the English Language Centre (ELC).
ELC faculty members use an array of teaching methods to engage the new students while enjoying practising their English. After the five-day intensive programme, the new students became more content and comfortable with their English. They were challenged on different English skills with speaking games and writing activities. These activities are aimed to arm the students with the language skills they will need to succeed during their time at UIC.
Senior Lecturer and Assistant Director of ELC, Mr John Ulrich explained that “We hope the students will have become excited about being in an all English environment and are encouraged to pursue more of their day-to-day activities in English.”

ELC Lecturer, Mr Christopher Lydon said “In order to progress and achieve in UIC, students need to become their own boss and discover their own particular mix of skills. In my lecture, I hoped that students will see UIC as a chance to develop as self-motivated individuals focused on their unique life goals.”
ELC Foreign Intern, Mr Tyler Austin said: “My goal for EEP was to assist the students in feeling comfortable and relaxed while using English in the classroom setting.” He went on to mention that “The ELC department strives to find the most interactive and enjoyable activities to utilise the students’ English abilities yet maintaining the core objective of getting students acclimatised to the English environment they will encounter during the next four years at UIC.”
The five-day intensive programme was appreciated by all, with students, teachers and foreign interns working relentlessly to make the introductory programme fun and successful week.
