Inaugural Hall Tutorials for First Year Students were attended from 29 February by the residents in the study rooms of the Innovative Education Hall, the Literary Education Hall and the Liberal Education Hall.
UIC Vice President Prof Zee Sze Yong, initiator of the hall tutorials, said these tutorials were made as casual and informal as possible, adding that it is a common hall practice to organise formal and informal tutorials for students as it is in fact one of the most important functions of halls.

Associate Vice President Prof Lilian Kwan, Director of the English Language Centre Dr Viola Wong, Chief of Student Affairs Prof Johnston Wong and Deputy College Librarian of the Learning Resource Centre Fung Ying Cham, spoke on topics under the theme of “learn how to learn”. These topics included how to enjoy learning, mastering effective learning techniques and e-learning skills.

Talented students entertained the audience by playing musical instruments before the start of each tutorial which was held by the Student Affairs Office. Delicious drinks and desserts were served and some students won books in a lucky draw.
Prof Lilian Kwan started her talk by showing footage of the film “My Fair Lady” in order to emphasise the point that students should learn more than what is taught in the classroom. She also encouraged them to make full use of the resources at the LRC.
Dr Viola Wong then used lots of interesting examples to teach the students how to ask and how to answer questions, while Ms Fung Ying Cham showed how to gain useful information through the library and recommended software MyET to learn English effectively.
