Four UIC teachers receive training from an International House London trainer
On 6 January 2016, ELC lecturers Jessica Steinbauer, Joel Sundstorm and Edward Martin, and ACE English teacher Mark McCallum took part in a teacher training programme that involved International House London. Martin Oetegenn, a trainer from International House flew from London to Zhuhai to instruct the four staff members how to train local teachers.
As a result of this cooperation, International House London, ELC and ACE can provide a Cambridge Certified English Teacher Programme (CELT-S). UIC will thus have a high standard English Teacher Training Programme that meets the Zhuhai Education Bureau's favour and become their prior partner for future cooperation. So far there is no institute in mainland China offering this course. This will make UIC into a powerhouse for providing English teacher training in China.
Jessica Steinbauer said, “This course is geared toward genuine problems Chinese English teachers face, like how to deal with large class sizes and how to motivate learners, so I think teacher trainees will find it very useful and will be able to adapt what they learn for their own contexts.”
Mark McCallum said, "The training is of immense value professionally, especially the fact that it allows us to offer Cambridge certification."
Edward Martin mentioned: “The course has given me valuable skills to share my experience in the English as a Second Language field with practicing, non-native English speaking, secondary school English teachers. I look forward to employing the valuable insights and resources I gained from the course to help other professional teachers gain greater effectiveness and self-awareness in their on-going teaching endeavours. I would recommend the course to any institution considering spreading their ESL expertise to other organisations.”
Joel Sundstrom said: "The training has provided a real opportunity for me to reflect on my own teaching and come in contact with some wonderful secondary education teachers around Zhuhai. At the end of this Cambridge course I foresee myself learning more as a trainer than my trainees, and I believe they will learn a lot."
