The Division of Science and Technology (DST) presented smart science during interesting activities in the UIC 10th Anniversary Science Week between 20 and 26 April.

In addition to the annual Poster Presentation, DST’s six programmes organised daily events on Applied Psychology, Food Science and Technology, Environmental Science, Financial Mathematics, Computer Science and Technology, and Statistics.

According to the organising committee the Science Week was not only a celebration but also a chance to promote understanding of science and technology.

Vice President Prof Zhang Cong said the Week showcased “students' and staff’s achievements”, and showed “why they think their chosen field is exciting and important”.

Prime research results

Prof Zhang also told that Applied Psychology Year Four student Cao Ruoyi has been enrolled for the five-year PhD direct-entry programme with full scholarship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 2013 the Academic Ranking of World Universities ranked the university 59th among educational institutes.

She will study at the university’s Edmond & Lily Safra Centre for Brain Sciences, one of the top centres for advanced brain research.

At the third Undergraduate Science and Technology Poster Presentation, she presented her final year project, Tracing Working Memory Development: A Computerised Test Measuring M-Capacity.

The Poster Presentation exhibited DST graduating students’ 63 prime research results, aiming to “enrich students’ learning experience, promote active engagement, and relate their academic knowledge to research traditions,” added Prof Zhang Cong.

The Best Poster Award of the Division went to Chen Yijiao’s project, Phytochemical Profiles of Edible Kudzu Benth Grown in China as Affected by Thermal Processing, and Lin Weitong’s the Application of Extreme Learning Machine in Wearable Devices

Charm of science

The Psychology Day was the first of the theme days. Spectators gained knowledge about psychology and the charm of the science by attending funny games, the bio-feedback relaxation competition, the psychological test, the knowledge competition and more.

On the Food Science Day students introduced ice cream with bitter melon and other newly developed food products. Many foodies came to make chocolate and tasted food from various countries and regions.

Demonstrations of eco-friendly equipment and students’ research projects were the highlights on the Environmental Science Day. Videos and posters alerted the audience to the importance of environmental protection.

Students eagerly entered an economics game on the Financial Mathematics Day. The game was a simulation of international financial and economic markets. Participants practised the theories they had picked up and tried to make rational decisions.

The Computer Science Carnival showed how creative computer science students are. Students controlled the robots they produced, competed to assemble 3D printers, projected holographic images and played cyber games.

Alumni returned to reminisce about the good old days at UIC and interacted with students on the Statistics Homecoming Day. Together with the teachers, they shared what they had experienced in the past years and cherished the congenial atmosphere at UIC .
