The foreign group learned about Chinese language, food, customs and culture at a lecture given by Jenny Cui, Assistant Professor of UIC’s Chinese Language and Culture Centre.

Group leader Dr April Toadvine encouraged her students to contemplate about the development of China in comparison of that of the US and organised group discussions between her and UIC students about what they picked up during the programme.

In addition to the in-class study organised by UIC’s International Development Office (IDO), the visitors toured several sites, including the Sun Yat-sen Museum and the Mangrove Natural Reserve.

"The experience was different, but I like it!" said student Kimberly McClaughry, who marvelled at what she saw.

“We wanted to come to China and learn about this country,” said Dr Toadvine. “We knew UIC from previous visits, and we have an exchange programme with UIC, so we decided to come back again [to complete the course on China].”

She added she had been impressed by UIC students’ English skills and assiduity shown at the past summer programmes at her college.
