Advisors discussed students’ internship programmes at the second meeting of UIC’s Division of Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS) Advisory Board Committee on 15 May.

Member of the Committee Prof Tain-Dow Lee, Founder of the Research Institute for Media Technology and Creative Industries, suggested that a liberal arts education be hands-on-experience oriented, and that UIC boost internship programmes by creating partnerships with corporations.

Mr Ng Shui-lai, Honorary President of the Hong Kong Social Workers Association, said internship opportunities are always open for UIC students in social work and social services institutions in the Pearl River Delta and elsewhere. He pointed out an internship means training for social work students.

Mr Lee C H, Chairman of Lee’s Consulting Co Ltd, praised UIC students for their good presentation skills, which are valued by corporations. He believed that mock on-the-job training ahead of internships will help students adapt to real scenarios in a workplace.

Chairperson of the Committee Prof Leo Ou-Fan Lee, Sin Wai Kin Professor of Chinese Culture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, suggested UIC make full use of its identity and uniqueness to create its own image.

At the beginning of the meeting, UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai said he was delighted to have these outstanding individuals counsel DHSS for its future development. He reiterated that a great university is always in pursuit of serving the community and UIC is exactly on that same road.

Dean of DHSS Prof Mei-hwa Sung and the eight Programme Directors also briefed on the updates of the Division and its programmes.
