
A student delivering a speech
A freshman stood out from the competition in the UIC Preliminary Round of the FLTRP (Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press) Cup English Public Speaking Contest among 23 contestants from all levels on 24 September.
A first year student from the International Journalism Programme, Hu Ying, will therefore, be entering the Guangdong Province Round of the nationwide Contest on behalf of UIC.
In the first round of the preliminary match organised by the English Language Centre of UIC, students were divided into two groups and each delivered a three-minute impromptu speech. The eight competitors who achieved the highest scores were then qualified to enter the final round.

These eight students presented fluent oral skills, remaining calm and clearheaded. They gave a prepared speech on “An academic education is more valuable than work experience”, and answered various questions from the jury.
The winner Hu Ying said she often got together with foreigners in high school, and likes to watch U.S. TV series, which fosters her interest and enhances her English proficiency.

She says she is thrilled to be selected to compete against participants from other Guangdong universities. “I will do my best to win glory for the College!” she said.

Final contestants receive certificates from the jury
The FLTRP Cup English Public Speaking Contest has been held since 2002, and is a nationwide English speaking competition with the highest standards, the largest scale and the largest number of participants.
