It is with great sadness that we report the death of Prof. Samuel Hui, Professor of Social Work and Social Administration Programme (SWSA), who passed away on 16 October 2013 at the age of 68.

Prof. Hui joined UIC in February 2007, and served as Programme Coordinator of SWSA, Associate Dean of Division of Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS), Acting Dean of DHSS, and Acting Programme Coordinator of Public Relations and Advertising Programme. Besides, he was also involved in many other college-wide development events and assumed various duties including serving as Chief Coordinator of Summer Programmes, and Chairperson of the Staff and Student Relation Committee. Prof. Hui released himself from all administration duties in April 2012 due to health problem, and suspended his work to recuperate from June 2012 to January 2013. Nevertheless, he came back to teach last semester when his body allowed it. He worked closely with his colleagues and possessed incredible energy and passion for teaching. He unreservedly imparted his knowledge and experience to students. Thus he was very popular with students and highly respected by them.

Prof. Hui was unsparing in his efforts to serve the community. He enhanced the training for social workers in Zhuhai and was keenly engaged in community building. With colleagues he visited Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province for a firsthand look at the damage caused by a massive earthquake, and later took a group of students and teachers to help the victims in the county.

To remember this outstanding teacher and valued colleague, DHSS will hold a memorial service in a few days, and SWSA will make a book of condolence on which staff and students will be able to sign and record their eulogies.
