Two UIC teams won second and third prize at the 2012 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest-Embedded System Design Invitational Contest (ESDC) held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (19-25 July). It was the first time UIC entered this contest.

The Guitar Robot team with Computer Science and Technology students Qiu Cheng, Xu Yihang and Yan Ximin developed a programmable instrument like an acoustic guitar to conduct music performances. They won second prize.
The Third Eye team comprising Year 3 CST students Chen Zhuo, Song Yuhao and Xu Haikun won third prize for building a system which combined voice recognition and GPS technology to help visually-impaired users to walk outdoors.
The two teams were supervised by Dr. Louis Tang, with support from Dean Stephen Chung, Dr. Weifeng Su and Dr. Kris Ho.
The competition looked for technical solutions to practical problems and allowed students the freedom to demonstrate any design based on the Intel embedded platform provided. The contest attracted 160 teams from renowned Chinese universities, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mexico, US, Russia, Malaysia, Brazil, Costarica, Argentina, and India.
