Over 1200 new students attended the Inauguration Ceremony on August 29.

President Prof. Ng Ching-Fai, Vice Presidents Prof. Zee Sze-Yong and Prof. Zhang Cong, Registrar Prof. Zhang Genfa, Prof. Stella Cho, Dean of the Division of Business and Management, Prof. Stephen Chung, Dean of the Division of Science and Technology, Prof. Meiwha Sung, Dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Eva Lai, Director of English Language Centre, Dr. Wu Hongyu, Director of Chinese Language and Cultural Centre, Mr. Thomas Killian, Director of Whole Person Education Office, and Prof. James Chan, Director of General Education Office attended the ceremony.

During his welcoming speech, Prof. Ng advised students to become active learners and to meet the challenges of UIC’s liberal education. "The main difference between high school and college life is the method of learning, and the opportunity to be immersed in a deep sea of knowledge. You are expected to be more self-reliant and self-motivated”, he said.

Prof. Ng also emphasized that UIC received good feedback from the students and parents by using English as the medium of instruction. "Learning different languages will change the way you think, and how you view the world. You will also experience the uniqueness of Whole Person Education, which is delivered through a liberal arts education model characterized by its broad curriculum and intensive interaction between staff and students. You will find that your teachers are your mentors and your friends as well", he added.

Prof. Zee Sze-Yong said: "Good universities have excellent teaching and learning standards, UIC provides facilities and supports such as student counselling services, Mentor Caring Programme, Residential Hall Culture Programme and Whole Person Education ... We try our best to support you and we also hope that you can help us to build, enhance and maintain the college’s reputation."

Prof. Zhang told students that they are about to begin their four-year journey of discovery. “Start here at UIC and make a difference in yours and others’ lives. Choose your direction wisely and make it a joyful journey”, he said.
