The Shadow Drama Pavilion was opened on November 30th at SHCV Block 8 of UIC. Directed by Prof. Zhao Shutong, a renowned shadow drama collector, the pavilion consists of a show-room and a performance hall. Prof. Zhao Shutong freely donated over 200 pieces of shadow puppets for exhibition and research, and invited professional folk artists to teach and perform.

President Ng Ching-Fai gave a speech at the opening ceremony, appreciating the significance of UIC shadow drama pavilion in promoting the traditional culture and looking forward to students’ learning as well as inheriting the art of shadow drama with innovative spirit. He also mentioned that as a part of UIC SHCV, the pavilion was spoken highly of by Hong Kong deputies to NPC and Minnesota Private College Association (MPCC) representatives. Dr. Hai-peng Guo, Director of Whole Person Education Office (WPEO) and Dr. Andy Fung, Director of WPEO Experiential Arts Centre attended the opening ceremony too.

Prof.Zhao Shutong said that it was a great breakthrough to admit traditional folk culture like shadow drama into colleges. As a very potential folk art, shadow drama will be enriched gradually in UIC’s multi-cultural environment; meanwhile its interacted surroundings will activate students’ innovation and creativity.

The Opening Ceremony began with the attractive performance by UIC Dragon-Lion Dance Team, then students played their shadow dramas, including “The Romance of West Chamber”,” The Sly Fox”,” Our Family”, which are all composed, fabricated and directed all by themselves. The performances won were highly appreciated by audiences.
