Co-organized by UIC English Language Centre and the Teaching English as a Second Language programme (TESL), the Second Zhuhai English Teacher Training Programme started at UIC on August 7th. In view of the success of the programme last year, the number of trainees has increased from 30 to 60. They are English teachers from 40 middle schools in Zhuhai. It will be a 20 day intense and immersive programme, conducted entirely through English, with the trainees accommodated at the Student Hostel Cultural Village.

Prof. Zee Szeyong, Vice President of UIC, says UIC is proud to be able to host this training programme, as the objective of UIC is not only the education of college students, but also to provide service to Zhuhai and the broader community.  Prof. Zee said this programme is one of the many training projects UIC offers, and he wishes a successful and beneficial training experience to all the trainees.

According to Dr. Dave Towey, Coordinator of TESL, and one of the coordinators of this programme, this programme includes theory courses, English enhancement, mock classes, choral speaking, drama, book reports and evening independent study sessions, amongst other things. Dr. Towey hopes that by the end of this programme, the trainees will generally enhance their English proficiency and teaching methods, and apply the benefits of what they learn at UIC to the education of their own students.

Director of the Zhuhai Education Research Center Mr. Wang Weiguo attended the opening ceremony. He said UIC provided excellent training to 30 Zhuhai English teachers last year and that was why the number of teachers was doubled this year. "Zhuhai locates near Hong Kong and Macau; we require our English education to be international and professional, and that's what UIC can offer." said Mr. Wang. He wished the training programme this year another successful cooperation between the Zhuhai Education Bureau and UIC.
