This was the second time UIC competitors took part in the competition. With the experiences and trainings from last year, 6 UIC teams all made better performances. One team made up of three students from statistics, namely, Yu Jiwei, Ming Yue and Zhu Dong won the national championship award, and other 5 teams won the excellent performance of Guangdong Province award.
Many teachers and professors attended the ceremony, including President NG Ching-Fai, Professor Edmund Kwok, Professor Zee Sze Yong, and Professor Stephen Chung. Professors and students gave their warm congratulation to winners.

In the Opening Remark, President NG Ching-Fai gave congratulations to the winners and thanks to all participants and mentors. He said the college was proud of the students’ performances. Then President NG presented the certificates with the National First Level Prize to the winning team members respectively.

The three members from champion team gave an experience sharing, during which they quoted a famous motto of Albert Einstein that “genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”. But one percent inspiration was the most important, even more important than ninety-nine percent perspiration, they added. “If you think mathematics is difficult, you may not know how complicated the world is.”

Prof. Zee Sze Yong gave the closing remarks. He said that as UIC students, we should take part in all kinds of competition as we can. From various case solutions and real practices we could learn more than textbooks cannot offer. He also thanked the participants and mentors for bringing reputation for themselves as well as the college.

Held in every September, the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUCUM) is an international online competition in mathematical modeling for universities and colleges all over the world. In 2010, there were more than 17,000 teams from over 1,190 worldwide institutions participated the contest.
