Prelude: Sports Meet, Student Festival, Whole Person Education Festival
As the prelude of the celebration for UIC campus inauguration, the first UIC Sports Meet and Student Festival were opened in the morning of Jan 12 at the stadium of Beijing Normal University and at the same time, the Whole Person Education Festival was also kicked off at UIC.
Students were preparing for the flag ceremony.

The Opening Ceremony of the First UIC Sports Meet was attended by Prof. Kwok Siu Tong, Executive Vice-President of UIC, Dr. Zhang Cong, Assistant Vice-President of UIC, Mr. Johnston Huang, Chief of Student Affairs Office, Mr. Ng Yiu-Fai, Director of Student Affairs Office and Dr. Guo Haipeng, Director of Whole Person Education Office.
Following the flags, athletes marched into the stadium in formations. In an exhilarating atmosphere, Prof. Kwok delivered an opening address. He said sports were not only good for health, but also good for cultivating teamwork spirit and were good cultural experience. He highly regarded the active roles the students played during the organization of the Sports Meet and hoped that everyone would have excellent performance.
Student representatives Luo Shengjia and Zhao Sien also delivered speeches at the ceremony. They called for all the students to try their best in the competitions and actively participate in the activities during the Student Festival. Later, on behalf of all referees, Mr. Johnston Huang, accompanied by two student referees, took an oath, stating that they would officiate in the sports meet with complete impartiality.

A student representative was speaking. Chief Referees were taking an oath.
Athletes: The True Sportsmanship
The Sports Meet lasted for two days. A total of 188 athletes competed for 15 items, including race of 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 3000m, 110m hurdle race, relay race of 4*100m, 8*200m and 20*50m, high jump, long jump, triple jump, shot put, javelin and tug of war.
 |
"Friendship First, Competition Second." |
Sportsmanship was the core value of the Sports Meet. Athletes were not only competing with their rivals, but also competing with themselves. Shi Baoying, the champion of the women's high jump, kept on challenging new heights even though her rivals were all defeated earlier in the competition. Her final record was 135m. The team formed by first-year students of the Division of Science and Technology beat their rivals with their invincible teamwork spirit in the 20*50m relay race. They believed that although victory was the goal, friendship always comes first.
Volunteers: Heroes behind the Scene
While athletes hailed their victory on the field, a group of volunteers were mindfully busy with their work: referees stayed in the sun till the last moment of the Sports Meet, recording the most precise results for every items; medical attendants kept watching the situation on the field, offering immediate medical care when emergencies happened; logistic service provided waters, food and necessities; communication service announced the latest results for convenient reference; other volunteers kept order in the stadium, offering help to anyone who was in need. The success of the Sports Meet came from the contribution of all the volunteers, who interpret sportsmanship in their own way: a real hero should strive for the best whenever and wherever he/she was needed.

Student Festival: The Connotation of Innovation
The Student Festival was planned, organized, and operated all by the students. It was an opportunity for the UIC students to show their ability in innovation.
The festival consisted of six different activities: cartoon and fashion show, a carnival for future designers; true-man chest, a witty game for real fun; quiz show, a crucial trial of teamwork spirit; original movie show, a platform for talented future movie makers; flea market, a colorful place to share the favorites; food festival, where dainties from all over the world whet your appetite.

aunching a New Campus, Setting a New Landmark
----UIC New Campus Unveiled
On Jan 15, 2008, UIC held a grand Campus Inauguration Ceremony attended by hundreds of distinguished guests and parents from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and abroad for the celebration of a new start in the development of the college. The UIC campus, covering an area of 133,000m2 below the Phoenix Hills in Zhuhai, was launched for use at the beginning of Academic Year 2007-2008. Only recently the entire complex was officially completed. Surrounded by green trees and beautiful flowers, the campus provides a pleasant environment for UIC students and faculty with its unique design that integrate beauty with applicability and environmental consideration.

Professor Xu Jialu, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Chairman of UIC Council, compared UIC to a toddler in his speech. He said, "Sometimes adults should learn from the toddlers since their perspective may be inspiring. UIC is a baby that was born with the care of all parties of the society. It's young, yet through its eyes we may find what we have never thought about during the past a few decades working in universities, some inspiration to other universities. In this unique campus, in the interaction with the UIC students, I can see the vitality of UIC as a young college, its great expectation and unpredictable development. During the last 30 years, when China has been continuing its effort in reform and opening-up to the world, her achievement has exceeded that of the past hundreds of years. As China will go on to a new expedition, it is an opportune moment for the UIC to celebrate its campus inauguration. UIC will make a great contribution to our country at the beginning of a new stage of development. "
In his address Professor Ng thanked all relevant parties contributing to the successful launching of the new institution, including government bodies and the administration of both parent universities. "Only two years ago we marked the ground-breaking ceremony on this premise. It is therefore with great joy that we celebrate today not only the completion of this new campus, but embrace the fresh growth and development of our educational goal, which is, indeed, most encouraging. On the solid foundation of parent universities, UIC has made great advancement in the new direction so that the nation's demand for outstanding college graduates may be met," he said.
Prof. Kwok Siu Tong, Executive Vice-President of UIC, said after the ceremony that the success of UIC was not only a success in one college, but also had a great influence to the higher education sector in Guangdong and the surrounding regions. He explained that in order to build an international college, UIC adopts the HKBU curricula and a quality assurance system to ensure that the academic standards of the degree courses conform to international standards. UIC also adopts a governance system that is formed by different committees. All of these, he thought, would have a great impact on other universities in Mainland China.
Officiating guests of the Inauguration Ceremony included Professor Xu Jialu, Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and Chairman of UIC Council, Mr. Zhong Shijian, Mayor of Zhuhai, Mr. Si Zhiguang, Deputy Director of Standing Committee, Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, Mr. Wang Yuxue, Deputy Director of Department of Education, Guangdong Province, Professor Zhong Binglin, President of Beijing Normal University, Mr. Wilfred Ying-Wai Wong, Council Chairman of Hong Kong Baptist University and Professor Chen Wenbo, Council Chairman of Beijing Normal University Zhuhai Campus. As well, Mr. Fung Sun Kwan, Managing Director of Kwong Yee Wo Shipyard Company Ltd. and Dr. Ronald Y. C. Lu, Managing Director of Ronald Lu & Partmers as Distinguished Guests. Professors Ng Ching Fai and Edmund S.T. Kwok, President and Executive Vice-President of UIC respectively, were present to welcome the distinguished visitors.

Professor Xu Jialu, Professor Ng Ching Fai, Mr. Fung Sun Kwan and other guests planted trees in the Tree Garden, where more trees will be planted to symbolize that UIC graduates will spread all over the world in future. As part of the ceremony, a new lecture hall, named after Mr. Fung Sun Kwan, was unveiled. Other activities included campus tours for all guests which were conducted by teachers and students as well as a Talent Show and a Costume Party organized by Student Affairs Office. Following the ceremony, an Inauguration Dinner for the Thousand was held for most participants to celebrate the historic occasion.
The UIC complex was designed by famous architects Dr. Ronald Lu and Partners of Hong Kong. The low rise buildings comfortably sit along the contour line, harmoniously merging into the lake environment, creating various semi-open spaces for student activities. Students and faculty can enjoy a moment of relaxation on the benches in the open courtyards where lawns and flower beds create a pleasant atmosphere. The design adopts an environmental-friendly approach. The building complex faces south so as to bring refreshing breezes in summer and block away cold winds from the north in winter. Glass curtain walls allow for maximum sunlight in the building. All the classrooms are equipped with energy-saving air conditioners and lights.
The building complex is divided into six zones from A to F. The first phase of construction (Zone B and C) was completed in Oct.2006; the second phase (Zone A and F) and the third phase (Zone D and E) were both finished before Sep. 2007. UIC is now focusing on the construction of the new student dormitory, where an artistic living space will be ready for students and teachers in the near future.

Jan 15, 2008
Honorable Prof. Xu, Guests of Honor, Guests, Colleagues, Parents and Students:
It takes ten years to grow trees, and a hundred years to educate a person. The building of a university is an enterprise of a hundred years. UIC with its little more than two years of history is just like a young tree that has just broken the ground. Its growth is difficult. Every step it takes is a challenge and a venture. Even though the venture may have mistakes and insufficiencies, support and understanding from all sides help UIC turn challenges into opportunities. Just like our campus designed by Dr. Ronal Lu, it's open, transparent, dynamic, interflowing and interactive. It's linked by continuously flowing lobbies, and consolidated by forums of various sizes. Please also look at the designs around this forum. They are the creations of Mr. Zhang Lu from Beijing, who voluntarily came to work with our students to turn this campus into an art center. The celebration banner has eight tree shoots of different and irregular sizes. They symbolize the eight components of our Whole Person Education with our staff and students coming from different background and cultures. Moreover, the Hong Kong Industrial Designers' Association has generously and voluntarily designed our college logo. Lastly, we built up a new education model, the Four-Point Education model with parent and society coming to support us with their constructive advice and criticisms. Our campus is opened and pro-realistic. Friends from different parts of the world have come to share our dream to help China develop a new kind of education. UIC belongs to all of you. On behalf of the staff and students of UIC, may I sincerely extend our deepest appreciation for all your support? Thank you very much!

UIC is Running for the Future
- An Interview with Parent Representative Mr. Hong Zhong
On behalf of all parents, Mr. Hong Zhong, Chairman of the Beijing Parents' Club, delivered an encouraging speech at the UIC Campus Inauguration Ceremony on Jan 15, 2008. After the ceremony, Mr. Hong shared more of his opinions to UIC in an interview.
("J" for Journalist, "H" for Mr. Hong Zhong)
J: Do you have any different experience today comparing with last time you were here?
H: It is quite different from last time. Last time I was here to send my kid to college. I knew little about UIC, so I was somewhat at a lost. This time, I have learned more about the college and I am happy and exited for the ceremony. I am also impressed with the effective way the college operates. Last time, only a corner of the building was finished. Now, just a few months later, the whole building has been finished. And just like Prof, Kwok put it, as the whole building is unveiled, we can better understand the concept behind it. It is an open campus fully equipped with modern technology. We can feel its unlimited potential. Besides, I had never thought that UIC would be able to organize such a grand event and I am proud to see today that the achievement of the college is recognized by so many people. I can feel the ardent of the staff and students for their work and the college.
J: What impressed you most at the ceremony?
H: I think this is not only a ceremony for the campus inauguration. We all know that UIC has been striving to build an international college in China. Its education philosophy has many differences from the traditional education in Mainland China. Whether its new way of education can be recognized by society is a question we all concern about. But today we have government officials, entrepreneurs, representatives from the educational sector as well as parents here. They are here not only to celebrate the inauguration of the new campus. They are here to show their support to the college and its educational ideal.
J: As you have mentioned, UIC has its unique philosophy in education. What do you think about the education philosophy of UIC?
H: Why should I send my kid to UIC if I don't agree with its education philosophy? The Western educational model has its advantages that we should learn after. UIC is a college with a global outlook, international faculty and an open and free academic atmosphere. All these will be helpful for our kids to adopt a broad international perspective and the ability to work in the global community.
J: Parents' Club is another innovative idea of UIC, and you are one of the founders of the first UIC Parents' Club. What do you think about the Parents' Club?
H: I think the importance of the Parents' Club is reflected in two aspects. First, it offers a channel for the parents to have more effective communication with the college, to provide advises and to participate in the management of the college. Secondly, the Parents' Clubs can develop into a huge social network. Every family has its own social network. 80 Beijing students will bring together 80 families with their own network; 2200 UIC students will bring together 2200 families. When all these networks joined together, we will build a huge network that covers most part of the country. We can provide our kids much larger space for development than the college itself. It is a pioneering work in China. I think we can further develop the idea, for example, through the club we can also facilitate the communication between the kids and their parents.
J: How is the Beijing Parents' Club operating? Do you have any activities recently?
H: The Parent's Club is a loose organization. We don't often organize activities. However, since the parents met in the activities we organized before, they have kept in touch with each other. This is more important than the activities themselves. Besides, with the Parents' Club, parents have a platform to express their opinions and discuss with each other. They can reach an agreement before they pass the problems to the college. It is a more effective way to express opinions.
J: Do you think the Parents' Club needs to be further improved?
H: Certainly. The Parents' Club has brought together rich resource. We have parents who work in the educational sector, the media, the government and the business sector. They all have rich social resource in their professional fields. What we should do is to find a way to integrate and make full use of the resource to help our kids, for instance, providing more internship and employment opportunities. The Parents' Club has already built a platform, but more work is still to be done to further utilize the resource.
J: As you know, we are preparing to launch several more parents' clubs in other regions. As the Chairman of the first Parents' Club, can you share your experience with the rest of us?
H: Different regions have different situations. It is hard to say what we can share with other parents since we are the only one in the country with no others to be compared with. We hope other clubs can be established as soon as possible so that we can exchange our different experience.
J: What's your plan for the development of the Beijing Parents' Club?
H: There are three steps. First, we will set up regulations for the club on the basis of mutual understanding. The activities of the club should be in accordance with the regulations. Second, the club relies on the activities it organizes to maintain its vitality, but if there are too many activities without definite purposes, it may cause repulsion among the parents. Therefore, we plan to organize general gatherings every half a year. When necessary, we can also have smaller gatherings with relevant parents. Third, the most important task is to integrate the club with the Four-Point Education system. I know the college is planning for it now.
J: You have met many UIC students today. What is your impression of them?
H: They have left me a very good impression. They are very considerate. For example, it was raining hard last year when we were here. The volunteers guided us across the campus, helped us to hold umbrellas and carry the luggage. But more importantly they are very confident about themselves. Today when we had a tour around the campus, two students served as our tour guide. I could see that they were proud of the college and they loved it. Nothing is impossible when one has the confident and the interest for it.
J: Please tell us your expectations for UIC and the UIC students.
H: Well, UIC is hardly three years old now. It is impossible for a college to mature without ten years of development. But UIC is not walking towards its future. It is running. Its progress is astonishing. Therefore, we hope that on the one hand, UIC can keep its pace in development, and on the other hand, it can pay attention to solidify its base to sustain further development. As for the students, I think the UIC students are blessed with happiness. Their parents care a lot about them, especially in their education. They are studying in an international college that provides them unlimited possibilities as it grows with them. So I think they should be thankful for their parents, for their families, for UIC and cherish the great opportunity they have. For them, today is not an end but a new starting point.

Coda: The Festive Costume Ball
The UIC Campus Inauguration Ceremony on Jan 15 ended with a Costume Ball, which, with its uproars and festivity, brought the day to another climax.
Mischief forgivable, devilment excusable, peculiarity is the theme of the night. Despite the cold weather, the night of The Beauty and the Beast was ignited by the enthusiasm of the quaintly dressed dancers. The three-hour party, dreamy, mysterious, with flowery costumes and dazzling hot dancing, was time for everyone on campus to escape from ordinary.
