At the recent Renmin Univ. Conference, "Chinese Contemporary Poetry in the Global Context", George O'Connell and Diana Shi, both of UIC, launched the 2008 Atlanta Review China Issue, which they co-edited and co-translated, and around which the conference was centered.
Atlanta Review is the world's largest circulation English language poetry journal. Based partly on work from their Peking Univ. Graduate Creative Writing Poetry Translation Workshop, the 2008 China Issue introduces the poetry of 2 ancient and 15 contemporary Chinese poets to the American and English-speaking audience.
The conference was attended by over a hundred leading poets, scholars, editors, and critics, including the main U.S. editor and publisher Daniel Veach. O'Connell gave a keynote address and read from his own poetry, while Shi read from her translations. Both were principals on panels discussing contemporary poetry and translation. A copy of their 2008 China Issue will soon be on display in the library.
