Oct. 24 – Researcher of the Chinese Academy of Science Dr. Jiang Zhigang, the first Chinese Whitley Award winner, is a specialist of the Procapra Przewalskii, an endangered species existing only in Chine. His works The Procapra Przewalskii opens a new page on the study of the Procapra Przewalskii. Dr. Jiang was invited by the Whole Person Education Office of UIC to give a lecture on Procapra Przewalskii protection.
In the lecture, Dr. Jiang analyzed the natural environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and talked about the wildlife and environmental changes near Qinghai Lake. According to Dr. Jiang, the distribution of the Procapra Przewalskii is mainly around the area near Qinghai Lack. Their existence is threatened by the worsening natural environment, human activities and global warming. Experts are trying to find ways to help the Procapra Przewalskii out of the danger of extinction.
The lecture attracted more than two hundred UIC students. Dr. Jiang was impressed by the environmental awareness of our students. He said he was surprised and glad to find so many students in the southern costal city of Zhuhai that cared so much about the environment of the west. In fact, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is not a far away strange land for UIC students. This summer, a group of UIC students went to the plateau for environmental study. They shared their experience with other students when they came back on campus and the environmental problem had become a hot topic at UIC ever since.
