Nov. 7 - Delta Poetry sessions were held successfully at UIC. 11 writers from
Macau and Australia participated in the activity.
The activity started with an introduction to the poets and writers, after
which was a Workshop Session and a tea party.
The activity was an uncommon opportunity for UIC students to learn more about
Chinese and Western literature. In the first part of the Workshop Session,
writers from Macau University used English to introduce some ancient Chinese
poets, such as Meng Jiao, Xin Qiji, Tao Yuanming and Li He. They recited poems
in Chinese and then showed students the English translations. Students were
surprised to find that it was interesting to compare the original Chinese poems
with their English translation, as the same poem might give people quite
different feelings in a different language.
In the following part, students had a chance to translate a poem with the
help of a writer. They were divided into small groups, each with a writer, to
translate Chinese poems into English or English poems into Chinese. All students
were absorbed in the world of literature. They had hot debates with each other
and worked hard on their works. A poet from Macau University told the students
that everyone had the ability to translate poems. The only thing that needed to
be considered about was how to make the translation a natural and truthful
reflection of the poet's emotion. The poets and writers were patient to the
students. The interaction went on in an easy atmosphere.
The Delta Poetry Sessions were inspiring to the students. They learnt the
importance of translation and cultural dialogs between different countries. They
hoped that UIC would host more activities of the kind in future.
