Taiwan Guitarist Dr. Jian Yingcai Visits UIC

In the afternoon of June 28, joyful guitar music accompanied by rhythmical clapping floated through the air in the UIC Teaching Building. With frequent applause and laughter from the audience, Dr. Jian Yingcai, musician, great guitarist from Taiwan gave an impressive lecture titled “The Bliss of Music: From Bach to Rock” at UIC. He also performed a piece of his own works by the end of the lecture. It was a wonderful music journey through time and space for UIC students and staff to experience the charm of guitar music.

Dr. Jian earned his degree of Doctor of Musical Art in Guitar Performance and Conducting from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, US and was listed in the American universities and colleges Who’s Who in 1991. He is one of the four Doctors of Musical Art majored in guitar in Taiwan, and is currently the Council Member of the Taiwan Guitar Society and a guitar educator that dedicates in improving musical education in Chinese society. He makes great effort in cultivating Chinese musical performers and educators. The lecture he gave at UIC was part of his tour for dissemination of guitar music, and also the starting point of his participation in musical education in Mainland China.

Although it was during the summer vacation, there were still dozens of students and staff that attended the lecture. Executive Vice President Prof. Kwok Siu Tong took time off from his busy schedule to participate in this guitar party and extend his warm welcome to Dr. Jian. An easy atmosphere covered the lecture room while everybody clapped to the beats of the music. Dr. Jian was impressed by UIC people’s passion and their deep comprehension to music. He highly praised the Whole Person Education Concept and its requirements in art accomplishment to students. Dr. Jian will be invited to be one of the art consultants of the UIC Student Living Center.
