Ten students have won the championship in the UIC Student Ambassadors final competition held successfully on Thursday, 17th May at UIC campus. The whole series of competitions, held in April and May 2007, was jointly organized by UIC Student Union and Student Affairs Office in collaboration with various academic and administrative units of the college.
This competition aims at enhancing the healthy atmosphere of the Whole Person Education at UIC and discovering excellent talents among the students to be models. Through their participation, the students have gained a better self-understanding, a deeper sense of belonging and a stronger sense of responsibility of the college. To ensure that the student ambassadors will be able to represent UIC among their fellow schoolmates and the society, all nominees have gone through a thorough and comprehensive nomination and enrollment process. Students with all-rounded talents were expected to compete. All the nominees, who received recommendations from at least ten students and two instructors have had voluntary service experience, are good in various areas including academic performance, extra-curricular activities, language proficiency, understanding of UIC educational ideology and interpersonal communication.
The participation rate of the students in the preliminary round of the competition was encouraging. After the first two rounds of competition, 18 outstanding students entered the Finals. Based on the UIC 4-Point Education ideals, the panel of judges of the final competition consisted of well-known individuals: Ms. Liang Xiaoyan (Executive Manager of DCDC (China) Ltd.), representatives of parents including Mr. Zhang Zeqi and Ms. Guo Jianqing, representatives of UIC staff including Mr. Joseph Wan (Chief of General Administrative) and Ms. Tanya Liu (Personnel Manager) as well as two student representatives: Ms. Luo Zhangjin and Mr. Xie Jiajun. The final competition included sections of self-introduction, group presentation of talents, eloquence contest (in pairs) and Q&A through which the 18 nominees tried their best to illustrate their understanding and appreciation of college life, in addition to showing their talents and knowledge in various areas.
With the support from the audience, the competition was keen. Among the 18 students, ten showed better performance and were chosen as the winners of this competition. Apart from the award, certificate and prize, they were granted the title, “Champions of UIC Student Ambassadors”, while the other eight students were chosen as “Runners-up of UIC Student Ambassadors”. All student ambassadors will have opportunities to represent UIC and participate in promotion projects by visiting places locally and internationally. For example, UIC has just received an invitation from the General Secretary of the Youth Assembly of the United Nation (UN) for visiting the UN headquarters. It symbolizes UIC's recognition in society, and an opportunity for some ambassadors to learn and further promote the college to the world.
UIC is committed to liberal arts education and the ideology of Whole Person Education. This competition is the first Student Ambassadors competition in the history of UIC. These newly born student ambassadors are the first fruits of UIC. We are sure that more and more fruits of UIC will become ripe in the days to come.
