On 14 Jan 2006, representatives of the University of New South Wales visited UIC. Prof. Stephen Cohen, Head of the School of Philosophy, the University of New South Wales and famous ethicist Prof. Dennis P. McCann, holder of the Alston Chair at Agnes Scott College in the US visited and hosted a workshop at UIC.

Prof. Dennis P. McCann emphasized during the event that for China to develop western practices in education, it is important to stress implementation and effort must not remain at the theoretical level only. Whole-person education in China is a pioneering effort and with persistence, the UIC joint venture will be a success.

It was noted that 85% of UIC students came from prosperous cities nearby such as Shenzhen, Guangzhou and of course Zhuhai. These cities are in close proximity to Hong Kong and the integration of these has nurtured momentous results, a strong testimonial to China’s economic success. In a similar manner, the approach adopted by Hong Kong in education can be made successful on the mainland. UIC has engaged many professors and instructors from Hong Kong and overseas and the great majority of courses are given in English. The ability to master English is given great emphasis at UIC and this won the praise of the visiting professors.

Visits of this type will provide UIC students with regular exposures to foreign experts in many different fields.
