Published on 21 April 2021

On 16 April, the medical staff of the Second People's Hospital of Zhuhai (Zhuhai Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine) came to UIC to provide on-site vaccination service for Hong Kong, Macao, and foreign staff and students. UIC is the first higher institution in Zhuhai to provide vaccination service for them on campus. Up to now, more than 5,000 UIC faculty and students have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Registration before vaccination

From 9 am, a professional medical team carried out vaccination at T29 Staff and Student Activities Centre. At the same time, UIC staff and student volunteers assisted in maintaining the order on the spot. Other than services including temperature measurement, registration, vaccination and observation by the medical team, there were additional translation services by student volunteers, informing the type of the vaccine, its effects, contraindications and precautions.

President of UIC Prof Tang Tao was vaccinated that day. He mentioned that everyone should be vaccinated to achieve group immunisation, therefore creating a safer working environment.

Associate Professor of the Chinese Language and Culture Centre (CLC), Dr Fung Shui-Lung, is from Hong Kong, China. He said that the registration and vaccination process was smooth, and there was no pain during the injection. After vaccination, it would also be convenient for him to travel between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

The Director of the International Development Office, Dr Katharina Yu, is from Germany. She said that she was delighted with the services provided by volunteers at the vaccination site, which helped foreign staff interpret and communicate with medical staff. Dr Yu also mentioned that to resume travelling around the world as soon as possible, it is necessary for everyone to be vaccinated.

Vegas Johnson, an American working as a lecturer in the English Language Centre (ELC), said that he chose to get vaccinated for his own and family's health. He also found it very convenient to receive the vaccination service at UIC.

Acting Programme Director of Media and Communication Studies Programme, Dr Jesse Owen Hearns-Branaman, is also from the United States. He said that the epidemic has been effectively controlled in China; however, it is everyone's responsibility to be vaccinated for better protection.

Dr Ho Ghee Wee, an associate professor of the Applied Psychology Programme, is a Chinese-Canadian. He believed that getting vaccination is first to protect oneself, and secondly, if everyone is vaccinated, then the spread of the disease can be effectively controlled.

Since 1 April, under the guidance and support of Zhuhai CDC, Zhuhai High-tech Zone People's Hospital and the Second People's Hospital of Zhuhai have provided vaccination services for UIC's teachers and students. Teachers and students who have not received the vaccination can also make an appointment for vaccination through WeChat official account including "Healthy Zhuhai" (健康珠海), "Zhuhai Publishing" (珠海发布), and "Zhuhai Government Network" (珠海政府网).
