Cooperative universities on cultivating talents at symposium at UIC

The Cooperative Universities Symposium was held at UIC on 13 May, with the theme of 'Cultivating Talents for the State: The Strategic Role of Cooperative Universities in the New Era'.

Distinguished guests from all over the country attended the symposium, including Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges (Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs) of Ministry of Education, Ms Liu Jin, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Teacher Education, and Minister Counselor-designate of the Education Department of the Embassy in Germany, Mr Huang Wei, Deputy Secretary-General of China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), and Minister Counselor-designate of Permanent Mission to UNESCO, Ms Shen Xuesong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province Mr Zhu Chaohua, Vice Mayor of Zhuhai City Mr Li Chong, representatives from cooperative universities, as well as Presidents of several universities in the Chinese mainland and Macao.

Cooperative Universities Symposium at UIC

The Director-General of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of Ministry of Education, Ms Liu Jin, said that cooperative universities had become vital forces in cultivating talents for China's development in the new era. She highly affirmed the achievements made, and also placed expectations for the cooperative universities, such as cultivating students with international vision and global competitiveness. Also, Liu Jin wants to develop world-class universities with unique characteristics to serve the national and local economic and social development.

Deputy Secretary-General of CEAIE and Minister Counselor-designate of Permanent Mission to UNESCO, Ms Shen Xuesong, said that cooperative universities serve as an essential part of China's education. It has played an exemplary role in the construction of high-level disciplines, the introduction of high-end teachers, and the training of international students.

Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, Mr Zhu Chaohua, said in his speech that the four cooperative universities in Guangdong offer rich courses in modern education and traditional culture, effectively enhancing Hong Kong and Macao's young students' understanding of the country and the nation.

The Vice Mayor of Zhuhai City, Mr Li Chong, said that UIC has been in Zhuhai for 15 years and has contributed to talent training. In addition, he explained how UIC has helped with Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development and the promotion of educational cooperation and young talent exchange between Zhuhai, Hong Kong, and Macao. 

President of UIC, Prof Tang Tao, said that cooperative education is a series of integration and innovation in system, management, teaching, evaluation system, and local services. Over the years, cooperative universities have carried out innovative explorations and formed their college-running characteristics, providing a reference for the latecomers.

Three topics were involved in the symposium, revolving around moral education, cultivating first-class talents, and deepening education reform.

In total, ten guests made keynote speeches, including Secretary of the Party Committee of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Mr Ying Xiong; Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Wenzhou-Kean University, Mr Zheng Xiaodong; President of Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, Mr Li Hezhang; Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Ms Chao Qiuling; Vice President of Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Mr Lin Danming; UIC Provost Prof Chen Zhi; President of New York University Shanghai, Mr Tong Shijun; Vice President of Duke Kunshan University, Mr Chang Xiaolin; Associate Vice President (Student Affairs) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Ms Gu Yang; and President of Sichuan Normal University, Mr Wang Mingyi.

The Secretary of the Party Committee of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, Mr Ying Xiong, introduced the college development pattern. Also, how the practice has led to the college adhering to Nottingham University's quality standards persisting in running college to serve the local economy.

The Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Wenzhou-Kean University, Mr Zheng Xiaodong, introduced the experience of organising rich cultural activities in cultivating students' devotion to the country and enhancing foreign teachers' understanding of Chinese culture.

President of Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, Mr Li Hezhang, introduced the talent training mode of the university with the theme of "Practicing the Mission of Cooperative University and Promoting the Opening Up Process of Education in the New Era".

The Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Ms Chao Qiuling, shared her views on the future social development and talent training in China. She maintained that cooperative universities should work together to build a high-level system of advanced education.

Vice President of Guangdong Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Mr Lin Danming, discussed the common problems faced by cooperative universities, such as university positioning, faculty recruitment, student admission, teaching mode and research innovation.

UIC Provost, Prof Chen Zhi, introduced the achievements made by UIC in international exchange and talent training with the theme of 'Integration and Innovation: International Exchange of Cooperative Universities and Talent Training in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area'.

President of New York University Shanghai, Mr Tong Shijun, introduced innovation in education held by the university during the pandemic, such as the creative measure of "cloud campus".

Vice President of Duke Kunshan University, Mr Chang Xiaolin, stated in his speech that he hoped the university would be in line with domestic first-class postgraduate education and cultivate international talents.

Associate Vice President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Ms Gu Yang, introduced the talent training system of the university. She explained the concept and practice of whole-person education, cultivating talents with a global vision and broad knowledge.

President of Sichuan Normal University, Mr Wang Mingyi, expressed his views on the university's future development. He maintained that Chinese universities in the new era should have a broad vision to strive for world-class and keep up with the development of science and technology.

President of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Mr Qiao Jianyong; President of City University of Macau, Mr Liu Jun; Director of Academy Administration Division of Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges of Ministry of Education, Ms Mao Dongmin; Director of Exchange and Cooperation Division and Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of Department of Education of Guangdong, Mr Li Jinjun; Deputy Director of National Industry-Education Integration and School-Enterprise Cooperation Committee of China Vocational Education Association, Mr Yao Yichun; and other distinguished guests also attended the symposium.
