Loving and caring, UIC students' charity contributions

Published on 7 June 2021

In the WeChat Moments of UIC students, you may always find them in community activity centres, ancient villages, and beaches.

UIC offers various volunteer service and environmental awareness courses to cultivate students' sense of responsibility and ability to serve society. Students have also spontaneously set up many public welfare associations and project teams to practically pursue public welfare causes with their inspiration and enthusiasm. Year by year, they never stop stepping forward.

UIC students have set up in total four Volunteer Service clubs. These clubs are the United Innovation Charity Club, the UIC Soup Kitchen, the UIC Dream Safari, and the UIC Green Bridge Charity Association. At present, there are altogether around 600 members running for various public welfare projects.

UIC United Innovation Charity Club

UIC United Innovation Charity Club (UICC) has helped students in nearby primary and secondary schools form clubs that cultivate and develop their hobbies. The vice president of UICC, Guo Ruijie, said that the clubs added colourful extra-curricular activities for children and guided them to communicate and cooperate happily and adequately.

Over the years, UICC's students have carried out projects to care for and accompany the children of migrant workers in Zhuhai and help them better integrate into the local community through schoolwork counselling, tuition support, psychological counselling, and skills training.

In addition, the U+ University Student Charity Forum held by UICC every year has become an important exchange platform for Zhuhai university student charity associations.

When it comes to summer, there is not only chirping cicadas and starlight but always full of hope and passion. Every summer, a group of UIC students would deliver their care and love to teachers and children in remote mountainous areas.

In 2010, Shanghai Adream Foundation and UIC jointly started the Dream Coach Programme, a far-reaching public welfare project dedicated to accessing rural children to quality education.

Since 2016, UIC Dream Safari has organized and recruited around 60 UICer to participate in the summer Dream Coach Programme and jointly carry out quality education with teachers in remote areas. At present, the project has already covered 28 provinces, cities and autonomous regions, including Yunnan, Jiangxi, and Guizhou.

Zhuhai is blessed with a stretch of coastline and beautiful landscape. To promote people's awareness of marine environmental protection, UIC students are also taking action.

UIC Green Bridge Charity Association has carried out a monitoring activity of Protecting Coastline in Qi 'ao Island in Zhuhai. After the beach cleaning, they sorted out and handed over the relevant data to the marine monitoring institutions, contributing to the scientific research data collection.

Every semester, UICC also holds a one-month teaching activity on marine conservation knowledge in the No.2 Primary School, Xiangzhou, Zhuhai, raising children's awareness of protecting the ocean through video and games.

In the past two years, the project team has cooperated with the Chinese White Dolphin Conservation Base in Guangdong's Pearl River estuary. UICC has carried out a series of publicity and activities about the protection of white dolphins.

UIC Soup Kitchen

Even during the winter, the chilly winds would never freeze warm hearts that are filled with love. So during the winter of 2020, the UIC Soup Kitchen (USK) launched the Warm Winter Plan in the Tangjia Community. They collected about 500 kilograms of old clothes from residents and donating them to people in remote, undeveloped areas.

In addition, USK has been carrying out activities such as voluntary blood donation at Gongbei Port, pneumoconiosis education activity for many years. President of USK, Wang Yuejiao, said that doing public welfare is to bring people the beauty that might have been absent in their lives. USK are always dedicated to making their contributions to the charity cause.

A glimmer of light will attract another and will illuminate another to form more excellent light. From environmental protection activities to serving the community, from voluntary teaching in summer vacation to helping the disadvantaged groups, UICers are making quiet efforts and giving off their own glimmers of light.

In the journey of public welfare, UIC students go all the way.
