UIC holds National Forum for Secondary School Principals

UIC held the 2021 UIC National Forum for Secondary School Principals on 22 May. The forum was held to discuss the fusion of Chinese and western culture under international education and gathered guests in education from all parts of China.

The Dean of Yenching Academy of Peking University, Professor at the School of International Studies, Peking University, Prof Yuan Ming; Secretary of the party committee and principal of Guangdong Experimental High School, Mr Quan Hanyan; Secretary of the party committee of Guangzhou Zhixin High School, Mr Chen Min; Principal of Nanjing Times College, Mr Li Kanghua; and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and UIC's President, Prof Tang Tao, respectively delivered keynote speeches.

Prof Tang Tao expressed his expectation that this forum could promote exchanges and communication among middle schools and universities. He wishes they will bring inspiration to each other to cultivate innovative talents in the new era jointly. He is willing to hold science lectures, have face-to-face communication with middle school students, and hope that more outstanding students choose UIC.

UIC's Vice President (Administration), Prof Mao Yaqing, presided over the forum

Prof Yuan Ming, who visited UIC's old campus eight years ago, shared the seven-year practice of Yenching Academy of Peking University with the theme of Exploration and Innovation.

Prof Yuan believes that the current world is experiencing a kind of cultural mixing. She mentioned that economic globalisation has enabled breakthrough development in technologiies and created a new global cultural space. Prof Yuan Ming believes that more opportunities should be provided to youths to show their creativity.

The Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangdong Experimental High School, Quan Hanyan, introduced the internationalisation of aesthetic education and shared some practical experience. He believed that aesthetic education is the shortcoming of the current middle school education, so it is essential to strive for quality education.

Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangzhou Zhixin High School, Chen Min, introduced the cultural source of Chinese and Western education in Guangzhou ZhiXin High School. He mentioned that it is the education sector's responsibility and mission to cultivate international talents.

UIC President Professor Tang Tao introduced UIC's liberal arts education, whole-person education and international education. UIC is the first new liberal arts university in the Chinese mainland, promoting arts and sciences. He explained about small-class teaching mode, attaching importance to teacher-student interaction, and giving students broad perspectives to cultivate students' overall capability and knowledge application ability.

Prof Tang believes that national anchoring is complementary to international education. UIC promotes the education of Chinese culture while providing an English teaching environment and international education to build up students' ability and awareness of Chinese cultural transmission. More than 70% of UIC's graduates choose to study abroad. Prof Tang hopes that UIC's students can be couriers of cultural exchanges, narrating Chinese stories to the world.

Li Kanghua, principal of Nanjing Times College, talked about the meaning of lifelong learning and education of core learning skills.

The awarding ceremony of UIC's high-quality student base was also held at this forum. A total of 57 key middle schools, including Guangdong Guangya High School, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Middle School, Shandong Experimental High School, Hebei Hengshui High School, Henan Zhengzhou Foreign Language School, Fuzhou No. 1 Middle School, were awarded.
