Published on 8 March 2023

When exploring your possibilities, do not stress about making the efforts pay off. Instead, focus on your interests and form healthy study habits. The stories of the four UIC students who excel in multiple aspects may inspire you in the journey.

Fourth-year student Yang Jie from the Finance (FIN) Programme of the Faculty of Business and Management (FBM)

Challenging oneself and forging ahead with fortitude

Studying at UIC is a beautiful adventure for Yang Jie, leading her to a new world.

Yang began the journey of participating in business competitions in her first year. She has joined and won prizes in many kinds of innovative competitions. For example, Her team was awarded the Bronze Award at the "Challenge Cup" of the National College Student Business Plan Competition; at the 2021-2022 CFA Institute Research Challenge South China Local Final, she received the Best Potential Award.

Although the competitions took up much of Yang's weekend, she was offered excellent internship opportunities and more professional experience.

Moreover, she received multiple scholarships at UIC. Yang has been admitted to the graduate programme of Business Analysis at the University of Hong Kong. Yang's undergraduate years at UIC are ending, and she looks forward to a promising future.

Third-year student Liu Jiajia from the Cinema and Television (CTV) Programme of the School of Culture and Creativity (SCC)

Finding one's own pace and taking the initiative

For Liu Jiajia, it is necessary to find a suitable learning method. One of her ways is sharing knowledge with other students, which helps her to fill in the gaps in the process of exchanging knowledge. Apart from that, she participates actively in class and is willing to express her ideas.

In her spare time, Liu extensively viewed excellent examples of academic and film works. By appreciating and analysing these works, she constructs internal logic and resonates with the creators. Liu mentioned her solution to be better at multitasking is to work at her pace and be more flexible.

Second-year student Lu Yang'anni from the Public Relations and Advertising (PRA) Programme of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Combing theories and practices to explore the knowledge boundary

Among many other awards, Lu Yang'anni won the President's Honor Award of 2021-2022. She often motivates herself to be persistent and balance between studying theories and practising.

Studying at UIC, Lu tried her best to complete every task with firm footing. She tries to apply the knowledge learned in actual practice. In the meantime, what she learned from many internship experiences enriched her perception of her major.

Lu believes that UIC encourages students to think independently, study actively and exceed themselves constantly, which helps her to dabble in new fields and be always passionate about learning.

Second-year student Li Jianwen from the Computer Science and Technology (CST) Programme of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST)

Improving comprehensively and gathering strength to pursue dreams

Winning the President's Honor Award of 2021-2022 and the Guangdong Medical Valley Scholarship made Li Jianwen feel excited and fulfilled that his devotion paid off.

In Li Jianwen's mind, interest matters most in his studies. For instance, he enjoyed programming and didn't mind spending much time on it. Meanwhile, as there are always a lot of tasks at UIC, he keeps a habit of previewing and reviewing to refresh himself. Moreover, he learned to seek advice from teachers when facing problems in study and life.

UIC cultivates its students to be Whole Persons, and Li Jianwen is one of them. He tried bungee jumping and skydiving in his spare time, completed a 360km cycling challenge around Qinghai Lake, and actively participated in university activities.

In his future professional career, Li hopes to start his own business and set up a technology company. He will not stop until he realises his dream.
