Distinguished President Wai, Professor Chen, Mr Cutrupia, Mr Liu, Professor Ng,
Dear students, respected parents, colleagues, and esteemed guests,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the 16th Graduation Ceremony of Beijing Normal University – Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC). Today, we gather to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the Class of 2024 as they embark on a new chapter in their lives. On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of the university, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to our graduates.
A few years ago, you entered this campus with boundless aspirations. During this time, UIC's innovative development and your personal growth have both left an indelible mark within our community. Amongst you all, some have devoted yourselves to public welfare activities, caring for children and implementing quality education in rural areas; while others have participated in international conferences and transnational organisations, eloquently voicing China's perspectives on the global stage; and some have also been actively engaged in international cooperation and cultural exchange, providing solutions to common challenges that are facing humanity, such as poverty alleviation and climate change. You have all added brilliance to UIC with your youthful vigour and unbounded determination, and the university has empowered you with its breadth.
In recent years, UIC has made remarkable achievements in scientific research collaboration, discipline construction, and international education. The establishment of the Institute of Advanced Study, a high-level scientific and technological innovation platform led by renowned academicians, and the launch of postdoctoral stations in mathematics and statistics, as well as the introduction of frontier disciplines such as data science and artificial intelligence, are a small testament to the university's progress.
As I return to UIC as President this April, I have had the pleasure of engaging in conversations with many of you, the "old classmates." Hearing your stories of growth at UIC and your hopes and plans for the future has left a deep impression upon me, one that emphasizes the profound power of education. At UIC, you have not only learned professional knowledge, but have also developed strong abilities, which makes your professors and me feel proud of you.
Students, as you set sail from here to face a rapidly changing global landscape, the world is in a state of turmoil, with some regions engulfed in conflict. We know that technological advancements, especially in artificial intelligence, are transforming society at an unprecedented pace. In the days ahead, you will grapple with the profound impacts and challenges of these monumental changes.
Yet, history has shown that pioneers who embrace change can lead the way and forge new paths, no matter how arduous the journey. With perseverance, progress can be found. As I look upon you today, I see the boundless potential within you. In this convergence of Chinese and Western cultures, your actions have the power to infuse the future with hope and shape the world to come.
To the graduates, I would like to share three pieces of advice with you:
First and foremost, embrace an open and inclusive mindset. Our cultural heritage, rooted in China's rich history and values, has shaped our identity. Yet, the unique resources of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area have enabled us to adapt these traditions to modern realities. This organic integration of Chinese culture and global perspectives empowers us to better understand the world, navigate great changes, and thrive in the global arena.
Secondly, persist in keeping up with the times and stride towards the world. UIC has cultivated a diverse educational environment, guiding us to transcend fixed mindsets and courageously venture out of our comfort zones. The power of liberal education lies not in imparting all knowledge, but in inspiring you to pursue a more elevated and refined life. As members of UIC, I hope you will maintain a spirit of excellence, and carry the innovative spirit forged here to the world, introducing Chinese civilisation with an international perspective. With unwavering determination, continue to move forward and contribute your energy and perseverance to the progress of our times.
Finally, embrace a global perspective to explore the world. The world is still turbulent, and development is endless. You are living in an era of great prosperity and ambition. I urge you not to be distracted by the temptation of fame and fortune, nor be content with "small prosperity." Instead, integrate your "small self" into the "greater self" of the world. In the years to come, do not abandon the contemplation of life. While focusing on your own development, sincerely care about the well-being of others, warm your heart, and give the world a warm embrace.
Dear students, your journey is just beginning. The road ahead is long, but I hope you will always be filled with hope and excitement for what holds ahead of you. No matter where you go, UIC will always be watching over and blessing you.
Thank you all, and congratulations again on completing this chapter of your life!
