The Music Hour: Love and Music

Published on 4 March 2008

"The Music Hour" Ⅱon Feb. 27, 2008 was the second mini-concert held on campus for UIC staff, offering a short respite from the complex challenges and angst of the new term. The theme of the concern was classic romance.

"How wonderful life is when you are in the world", the words of Elton John sung by Mark Clulow in his own genuinely sincere style reminded the audience that love songs are all about melodies and words that everyone can feel. Native Spanish speakers Roser and Hestor shared 2 songs - simply and touchingly rendered with voice and guitar - giving everyone a quiet moment of reflection. Serge brought the audience an old classic Edith Piaf love song from 1946 - the era and country of 'true romance' - La Vie En Rose. Jeff Wilkinson shared a song composed by himself in the folk song tradition - voice and guitar alone. Alma Tesorero entertained the audience with two great 'classics' - For Once in My Life and I've Got You under My Skin. Lilian Li presented a beautiful 'Tianlu' - a Tibetan song. Roser and Kitty added the 1965 Beatles classic 'Michelle'. Kitty also sang My Funny Valentine from 1937. At the end, everyone at the concert together sang the Chinese classic 'Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin' while Beth Stauffer played the piano.

One of the organizers Kitty said the concert had been prepared for one month and she was satisfied with the outcome, "People really thought it interesting and felt good. The audience was happy. That's enough."

The music series was proposed by Dr. H. P. Guo. It was set for a quality music-making and music-listening experience on campus for UIC staff and students.
