Up to sky! Insights on aviation and economy at Huitong Lecture Series

Published on 25 September 2024

UIC Chair Professor Prof Shan Xiaowen at the Institute for Advanced Study shared aviation science and its role in the low-altitude economy during the second lecture of the Huitong Lecture Series on 19 September 2024.

Prof Shan first explained the principles of aviation science and its development with historical figures' attempts to reach the sky, including Leonardo Da Vinci's research on the principle of flight and the Wright brothers' realization of the first powered flight, whose experimental practice lay the foundation for low-altitude economic development, particularly in improving transportation efficiency, reducing environmental pollution and innovating business models.

He then mentioned electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) technology and embraced a forward-looking vision of its role in the future of urban air mobility (UAM). Additionally, he shared the latest research results of his team in eVTOL, including aerodynamic optimisation design of fixed-wing eVTOL and flight test validation of high wind resistance performance.
