The MRC Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge hosted the Within-individual Variability Workshop, and UIC Vice President (Research and Development) Prof Pan Jianxin was the only Chinese keynote speaker invited to the event. After the conference, Prof Pan was invited for a discussion with the MRC Biostatistics Unit, paving the way for potential collaboration between the two institutions.

Over 120 international statisticians, epidemiologists and data analysts interested in both methods and biomedical applications attended the workshop online and offline, discussing recent developments and future directions in modelling variability at the individual level.
Experts from universities including UIC, the University of Chicago, the University of California, Davis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the University of Oxford shared their insights during the talking sessions, and Prof Pan's speech on "Modelling biomarker variability in joint analysis of longitudinal and time-to-event data" received extensive attention from the participants.

Prof Pan and Prof Philippe Rast from the University of California, Davis, were invited as forum discussion guests along with the conference organiser, Dr Jessica Barrett from the MRC Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge, to engage in in-depth discussions on within-individual variability and its application in different biomedical fields.

Later, Prof Pan and the Unit held a meeting, and the two institutions tentatively agreed on a range of cooperative initiatives, including PhD and postdoctoral exchanges, short and long-term faculty visits, organising small seminars in rotation, and joint research and grant applications.
Notably, in the past two years, four students from the Department of Statistics and Data Science at UIC have been admitted to the postgraduate programme in Public Health Sciences by Cambridge, showcasing UIC's talent and the strong academic ties between the two institutions.

Prof Pan is UIC's Vice President (Research and Development) and Chair Professor, he also acts as the director of Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Interdisciplinary Research and Application for Data Science.
The Medical Research Council (MRC) Biostatistics Unit (BSU), founded in 1913, is one of the largest groups of biostatisticians in Europe and a major centre for research, training and knowledge transfer in biostatistics.
