Native American culture pervaded the Staff and Student Activities Centre of UIC between 12 and 16 May. History and culture were told through a photo exhibition, film screenings and a guest talk.

The most compelling part of the Native American Culture Week was perhaps the native handicrafts on display. Navajo Joel J Tohtsonie, Lecturer of the English Language Centre, presented exquisite dream-catchers he made.

In Navajo culture, a dream-catcher is a handmade, net-like object. It is placed above the bed and believed to filter terrible dreams so that the sleeper will have pleasant dreams all night. Joel J Tohtsonie also taught the audience how to make a dream-catcher.
