Professor Donald Chang introduced a new perspective on science education to year one students at UIC’s Division of Science and Technology High Table Dinner on 18 May.
Prof Chang was a founding faculty member of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and is currently Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor. He has published three books and more than 100 papers in international journals, including Nature and Science.

UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai (l) presents a souvenir to Prof Chang
Prof Chang told the audience that academic specialisation increasingly results in isolation among scholars and the disciplines they study, while science and technology are rapidly developing. He highlighted that Macro-Science, a way of critical thinking in cross-discipline studies, can help people understand the common principles in systems of different complexity and eventually see the big picture.
He then illustrated how HKUST implemented the Macro-Science programme from three different angles: a scientific understanding view of things, a Macro-Science salon and associated research activities.
