[UIC Beacon] Minor programme introduced next semester

Published on 16 January 2015

Minor programmes will be available from next semester on, and a music minor will be the first to be launched.

Approved by the senates of UIC and Hong Kong Baptist University, Year Two students will have the opportunity to be part of the first intake to study the Minor Programme in Music.

“The Minor Programme in Music is designed to enable students to pursue their musical interests and realise their creative potential,” stated Dr David Walters, Assistant Professor of General Education Office and Programme Director of the music minor. “The elective courses include creative music technology, composition, harmony, and the option to explore historical topics and world music.”

Musical activities are very common on the campus. On 5 December 2014, Dr David Walters (Assistant Professor of GEO), Dr Lee Hock Min (Associate Professor of CLC) and Dr Anthony Tsui (Acting Associate Dean of DBM) present awards to the best three student singers at a campus-wide contest.

According to Vice President Prof Zee Sze Yong, UIC has been endeavouring to set up minor programmes under the Free Electives courses since a new curriculum framework was approved in 2012.

“The new-born minor programme has taken up long-time research to establish all procedures, rules, regulations, and quality assurance measures,” Prof Zee said.

“We have to decide how many and which minor programmes to offer, how to design these programmes, which programme will come first and which later, and many other issues. I'm glad that thanks to many staff members' effort, the minor programme will be introduced soon.”

At a Briefing Session for Year One and Year Two students on 10 December 2014, Dr Lucinda Li, Senior Assistant Academic Registrar, said that the minor programmes will offer an option for students to earn 15 out of the 24 units of Free Electives, in addition to spending a semester abroad, taking more GE or other major courses.

Another four minor programmes are under preparation and will probably be available for the 2015 Cohort: Finance (for DBM students), Business (for non-DBM students), Public Relations and Advertising, and Applied Psychology.

Such introductions comply with UIC's liberal arts education, and will enable students to receive more inter-disciplinary academic training and practical knowledge, and skills that meet social needs.
