UIC showcases itself by giving real classes to prospective students

Bursting with excitement, 200 senior high school students, mostly from Guangdong Province, with their families came to UIC and experienced its Showcase Day on 7 and 8 February.

Senior high school students have English classes during UIC's Showcase Day

Some 400 students from over 60 top senior high schools signed up for this event and nearly half of them were chosen to participate.

In addition, the Showcase Day attracted 19 Hong Kong students.

Experiencing UIC's courses

“I want to experience myself classes given in English and different ways of teaching,” said Ms Chen, a third year senior high school student from Shenzhen.

Chen’s mother added:“My colleague has a child studying at UIC. He speaks very well of the college, which makes us very interested.”

Chen and other participants took various classes in the two-day programme to understand what university life is like at UIC, including English lessons, major programme courses, Whole Person Education experiential learning, and General Education classes.

Prospective students take a campus tour

Student Cheng from Foshan No. 1 Middle School marvelled at what courses UIC offers. “The Chinese Archery and Guqin are traditional culture. I’m surprised at how this college can include both these courses and modern courses like 3D printing.”

Parents learn about the college

While student Dai from Jiangmen No.1 Middle School was impressed by the Emotional Intelligence class. He said: “Our group were required to erect a tent, with some blindfolded with a piece of black cloth, some forbidden to speak and some with bound arms. From the class we learned how to manage our emotions when facing difficulties.”

Dean of DBM Prof Stella Cho counsels parents Students share what they have learned

UIC Vice President Prof Zee Sze Yong stated that unlike many other universities in mainland China, UIC upholds Liberal Arts Education and Whole Person Education.

He continued that the college demonstrated some of its courses, hoping the students and parents would further understand its educational philosophy by first-hand experience.

The Showcase Day was one of the programmes to celebrate UIC’s tenth year anniversary. It was massively supported by UIC’s staff members, and 34 of its students returned to the campus to help despite having a winter break.
