The Division of Business and Management invited Professor Patrick C.P. Ho to give a distinguished lecture on May 11th morning at B101. The lecture was well received by many students in different programs especially Culture Industries Management Program.
The guest lecturer, Professor Ho is a celebrity in Hong Kong cultural industries and economy who has rich experiences and several honorable titles in Hong Kong. He is executive Vice-Chairman, Secretary General, and Chief Executive of China Energy Fund Committee; Former Secretary for Home Affairs and Former Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
At the beginning of the lecture, Prof. Cho, the Dean of DBM, gave a brief introduction to the audience, and then Prof. Ng made an opening remark for the lecture. He pointed out the significance of the cultural industries, “In this age of globalization, cultural is increasingly being shared, transitioning national interests, and cultural industries are getting more important in 21st century.” He also mentioned the vision and mission of UIC’s Cultural Industries Management program while expressed his expectation to the CIM students.

After Prof. Ng’s remark, Prof. Ho started his lecture--Cultural Industries Development and Economy in 21st Century. He concentrated on the importance and the impact of cultural industries and creative industries in 21st century. Firstly, Prof. Ho explained the impact of globalization on the economy via illustrating 3 major reforms for mankind and production chain. Then he pointed out the difficulties and challenges facing people and talked about the survival and transformation strategies. Furthermore, Prof. Ho referred to the creative industries policies of different countries and districts; in particular, he compared the policies of Hong Kong with Mainland China. Prof. Ho also particularized UK as a representative example of successful cultural industries development.
On the next stage, Prof. Ho gave us a new definition of creativity. He stated that creativity was a phenomenon of purposefully creating something new and useful. Additionally, he emphasized that to creativity comes out from failures. We need to be positive to take more trails and errors and not be afraid of making mistakes. Moreover, he compared the transmission of the creative ideas between China and foreign countries to the 3rd Silk Route, in which we trade for creative ideas, cultural products and creative talents. At the end of the lecture, Prof. Ho encouraged the students to learn more about creative ability. “What we get from the school, is the ability to create and the capacity to learn new things”, he shared with the students.

After the lecture, several students and teachers asked Prof. Ho some questions. Prof. Ho answered their questions and gave them some advices. Finally, the distinguished lecture ended in a warm applause.
